At this young age, help players learn names of components of the basketball court. Begin by focusing on dribbling, passing and shooting basics. Then, work in fun games where kids can practice those skills. PRO TIP: Naming all of your drills saves time during practice and helps players get into drills quickly and efficiently as you move into your season.

Creating a plan ahead of time is crucial to getting the most out of your time in the gym. Think about how you want to manage your practices and structure them routinely. There are two simple styles of organizing and managing your practice. PRO TIP: Option 1 requires ONE coach who feels comfortable teaching and/or explaining the principles of the drills; Option 2 requires ALL coaches to be comfortable teaching and/or explaining the principles of drills.

Option 1 Before each drill, all players watch a demonstration in designated area and break out to do the same drill in different areas around the gym.

Option 2 Each coach is assigned one drill for the day that s/he executes at her/his station. S/he is responsible for explaining the key points and demonstrating as players rotate to their area in the gymnasium.
